1.  Isaac Newton (1642 -1727) was the first person to explain tides scientifically.  His explanation of the tides (and many other phenomena) was published in 1686, in the second volume of the Principia.[1]

2.  Oceans cover about 70% of the Earth's surface.  The oceans contain roughly 97% of the Earth's water supply.

3.  The Earth's oceans are all connected to one another.  There are five oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.

4.  There are also many seas (smaller branches of an ocean); seas are often partly enclosed by land.  The largest seas are the South China Sea, the Caribbean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea.[2]

5.  The Earth's oceans are all connected to one another.  Until the year 2000, there were four recognized oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic.  In the Spring of 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization delimited a new ocean, the Southern Ocean (it surrounds Antarctica and extends to 60 degrees latitude).[3]

6.  Ninety-seven per cent of all the water on Earth is salty.  Only three per cent is fresh water.  Of that three per cent, over two per cent is frozen in ice sheets and glaciers.  And that means that less than one per cent of that three per cent fresh water is found in lakes, rivers and underground.[4]

7.  During the day the sand gets very hot, up to 90ºC (195ºF).  That is almost hot enough to boil water and too hot for alcohol.  It changes into a vapor around 80ºC (176ºF).[5]

8.  Mathematicians at the University of Hawaii tried to guess how many grains of sand are on the world's beaches. They came up with 7,500,000,000,000,000,000, or seven quintillion five quadrillion grains of sand.[6]

9.  Saving water also saves energy.  6.5% of the energy used in the state of California is for pumping and treating water..[7]  Shortening your showers even by a one or two minute reduction can save up to 700  gallons per month..[7]  Turning off the water while brushing your teeth saves three gallons each day..[7] Fixing  leaky faucets and plumbing joints saves 20 gallons per day for every leak stopped..[7]
